We’re back in KL, Peninsular Malaysia on a weeklong holiday during the Hari Raya school break. While we love Sarawak and all the unique foods it has to offer (like durian flowers), there are some dishes you just can’t get in Kuching, like Mum’s popiah.
Mum’s Popiah is Still the Best
It’s been a while since we were last in KL so we’ve got some pent-up food cravings to satisfy. Halfway through our trip, here’s a short list of things we’ve eaten so far.

We finally found the restaurant we were looking for.
Jit Hin Restaurant, Tebakang
Way back in December of 2009, we drove out to Serian, a small town about 45 minutes’ drive from Kuching, to check out the local fruits they had on sale at the market. Our intention was to drive further out to the village of Tebakang to have lunch at a place highly recommended by our friend. But we couldn’t find the shop we were looking for.
The restaurant known as Jit Hin is famous for its huge prawns and wild meats. We always talked about going back with our friends, but it didn’t happen until just recently when we all decided to go during the Labor Day public holiday. One of our friends pre-ordered the prawns for the whole lot of us, and so we arranged to meet at the restaurant at 11 AM for lunch.
Following my sister’s Hawaiian-style wedding reception, Annie and I had an intimate dinner for 2 at the venerable Alan Wong’s Restaurant to celebrate her 40th birthday.
Alan Wong’s is one of the most recognised, award-winning fine dining establishments in Honolulu. It was noted as one of the Top 10 best restaurants in the nation by Gourmet Magazine in 2006. Presidents and chiefs of state dine there. Chef Alan Wong himself, credited as one of the founding fathers of Hawaii Regional Cuisine, garnered the James Beard Foundation award for Best American Chef – Northwest in 1996. It has a well-deserved reputation.
